Time Out for Grandpa

Some hilarity from our house...

Lorelai: Grandpa, jump!

Grandpa: How about you jump? I'll watch.

Lorelai: Jump! Jump! Jump! Grandpa!

Grandpa: (laughs, does not jump)

Lorelai: I said jump!

Grandpa: (laughs again)

Lorelai: I said jump! That's it. Time out Grandpa!

Grandpa: Time out?

Lorelai: Yes, time out for Grandpa!

Grandpa proceeded to do his 2 minutes in time out. Luckily, Lorelai decided to keep him company while he did his time.

Stain Removal Success!

I know you've all been sitting on pins and needles wondering how the new stain remover concoctions have panned out. Well the suspense is over. I set out to test the stain removers that I had listed in my last post this week. I began with stain remover recipe #2:

    1/2 cup ammonia
    1/2 cup laundry detergent
    1/2 cup vinegar
    1/2 cup water
Mix and store in a spray bottle

Let me first qualify the level of the stains that I was treating... I'm not the best laundry mommy. I let stains sit on clothes for a week, sometimes two, before I ever touch them. On a rare occasion I will rinse out a fresh stain with some cold water, but most often it gets thrown in the laundry basket until I get around to doing a load of laundry. And then that stain is stuck like chuck to that piece of clothing. (Cut me a bit of slack - being a working mom isn't easy sometimes!)

But this week, I gave recipe #2 a run for it's money, and I'm happy to report that it worked really well! I did a load of Lorelai and Logan's laundry which was well stained with a variety of opponents: spaghetti sauce that Lorelai finger painted on her shirt, formula that Logan and spit all over her jammies, unidentified orange stains (I have no idea what they could have been), and the lovely poop stains that diaper explosions leave us on the rare occasion. When I brought the laundry down to the laundry room one evening, I sprayed down each piece with the stain remover. Then I left them until the next morning. I threw them in the washer as normal, and miraculously almost every piece came out spotless! I will admit that the stain from the diaper disaster is still there although much less in appearance than it was initially. Baby formula was no match! And the majority of the spaghetti/mystery orange stains were completely gone. I only had a couple of pieces that needed further attention. I sprayed them down a second time and will be throwing them back in for a second round in the washer tonight.

I may have found my miracle potion!

Forever Stained

I love being a parent. Truly. It is the best thing that I've ever done in my entire life. That said, there are certain things that I despise about being a parent, and number one on my list is laundry. It should be noted that I don't mind doing my own laundry or even my husband's laundry, but children's laundry is about the worst task I've ever encountered.

When I moved out from home about little over 10 years ago, my mom and I spent a great deal of time stocking my new apartment with everything I would need to live on my own... towels, sheets, furniture, etc. During that time she stocked me up on laundry detergent and one bottle of stain remover. Until Lorelai joined our family, I still had that one bottle of stain remover. Seriously. That's how rarely I ever needed to use it. This week alone, I have no gone through two bottles of Totally Toddler stain remover. It is the only thing that I can find which will take out baby formula stains. And for some reasons, which I do not know why, soy formula seems to stain so much worse than regular formula. If Totally Toddler can't get the stain out, I turn to my good buddy Lestoil.

Formula stains in the making!

The biggest problem here is that these stain removers aren't cheap! And I'm convinced I'm going to contract some type of respiratory illness with all the fumes I'm inhaling as I spray down each item of clothing. And nothing frustrates me more than when I can't get a stain out. Today was a five-star day because one of Lorelai's shirts (which I have treated and washed 12 times) finally came clean today. Of course, the shirt looks like she's had it for 10 years now instead of the one time she's actually worn it...

So in an effort to find a cheaper, more effective option to my stain removal woes, I've decided to make some homemade stain removers. After scouring the internet, it looks like most of the recipes I found rely on varying proportions of four main ingredients: ammonia, vinegar, laundry detergent, and water. Here are a few of the options I came across:

1) 1/2 cup ammonia
    1/2 cup vinegar
    2 tablespoons liquid laundry detergent
    2 quarts water
    - mix together and store in spray bottle.

2) 1/2 cup ammonia
    1/2 cup liquid laundry detergent
    1/2 cup vinegar
    1/2 cup water
    - mix together and store in spray bottle

Others had some varying ingredients like Borax or liquid dish soap:

3) 1/4 cup Borax
    2 cups water
    - sponge on to clothing and let dry or soak fabric in mixture before
    washing as usual

4) This one is for heavily stained whites only:
    1/2 cup laundry detergent
    1/2 cup dishwasher detergent
    1/2 cup bleach or ammonia
    - soak clothes in washing machine overnight or until stains disappear;
    launder as usual

5) 1/2 cup water
    1/2 cup vinegar
    1/2 cup ammonia
1/4 cup liquid dish soap or heavy duty laundry detergent
    - mix well and store in spray bottle

6) 1/3 part non-sudsing ammonia
    1/3 part liquid dish soap
    1/3 part water
    - spray on clothes and let sit no longer than 5 minutes before
    laundering as usual

So I'm going to give some of these options a try. Hopefully one of these will make my laundry chores a little easier! I'll be sure to let you all know if I find a miracle solution. In the meantime, I'm off to wage battle on some stains.

The MMR and Autism Link

A friend recently emailed me this article which discusses the scientific merit of the research study which started the panic among parents over whether to have their children vaccinated or not. As a rather new parent, I struggled a bit with this idea. Both of my children have (and will be) immunized. Still, I was nervous when they received their shots, thinking to myself "what if something goes wrong?" Fortunately, the above article shows that the research study was in fact a fabrication of results in order to help some folks get rich. The research journal that the study was published in actually retracted the article. I'm thankful to hear that there was no such study which linked MMR and Autism together, but sad to hear that there are such unethical researchers out there.

So parents, take a sigh of relief. I have.

Unfortunately this also means that we are still in the dark about preventing and curing autism and autism spectrum disorders. Check out the Autism Speaks homepage for more information on autism.

New Year's Resolutions

I'm not one for New Year's Resolutions. Generally I set lofty goals for myself that last until about January 3rd and are then never spoken of again... until next New Year's Eve. This year I've decided to take a different approach. This year I'm making reasonable demands on myself. The resolution this year is to take better care of myself and my family. It's going to be a great journey. One without crazy expectations. I'm actually excited about my resolution this year!

I find that about two times a year I am highly motivated to clean my house from top to bottom. One of those times is at the new year. I like to start the new year off with everything nicely organized - everything in its place. So this week I'm scrubbing down the house. For those of you who may be dragging out your mops and buckets too, here's a booklet that I found on the Clorox website which offers some great tips for keeping your home healthier for your family.

Happy New Year's!
(and happy cleaning!)
