The Big Move

I know... it's been quite a while since I've posted. Taking care of two little ones is rather time consuming! Who knew?!? But I'm going to make a concerted effort to post at least once a week. Here's the latest tale of mommy magic...

I had put off putting Lorelai in a toddler bed for as long as I possibly could. The idea of her no longer being confined seemed like something I should avoid for as long as possible. But the day finally came where she began attempting to climb over the rails of her crib, and I saw painful, tear-inducing accidents in our future. Thus, I broke down and Jon converted the crib into the toddler bed. Saturday night... no problem. Sunday nap was at Grandma's house... Sunday night... no problems. Monday nap... perfection. Monday night... awesome. Tuesday nap... NO WAY!!! She's out of bed before we can close the door to her room. She's banging on the door. She's screaming and crying. And oh no! Can it be? Yes! She has now learned to open doors! Ahhhhhh!!!!!!!

So we've marched her back to bed about 14 times so far... this is going to take some serious patience!

Wish me luck!

Business Travel as a Mommy

I am preparing to go on my first business trip since Logan joined our family, and while I'm excited about the work I'll be doing (and the promise of uninterrupted sleep!), I'm not looking forward to being away from my girls. Fortunately, I don't travel for work that often, and I'm usually gone only a few days at a time. But regardless, it is still hard to be away from my family.

Shortly after we adopted Lorelai, my husband and I made the agreement that if we had to travel for work, the other would furiously document the days away with tons and tons of pictures and home videos. And if she accomplished any major milestones while one of us was away, we wouldn't tell the away parent and would let them think they were there for the big event when they saw it after returning home (thus diminishing our working parent guilt). This all worked out nicely until one trip when she was about seven months old. I was gone for a week. When I came home I found Lorelai sitting in her high chair having dinner. When she was done, my husband cleaned her up and set her down on the floor. Instantly she took off crawling across the floor like a rocket! My husband cries, "Oh my god! Look what she's doing!" as though this was her very first attempt at crawling. Thus it proved that our lying to each other about her accomplishments wasn't going to work. She had learned to crawl the day after I left and spent the week perfecting her new found skill. I learned that I wasn't going to be able to be there for every major event, but I'd be there for most of them and as many as I could be.

With my upcoming trip, I am hoping that Logan (and Lorelai) won't break out any new "tricks" until I'm back home, but I know I won't be able to guarantee that one. I'll just have to hope that if they do my husband will capture it on film!
